Cross Country Coaches

The Shiloh Cross Country teams, boys and girls, were lead to state championships with the help of our two coaches: Coach Godfrey and Coach Richards. Last year, the guys finished second in the state tournament by one point, and the girls finished seventh. The team began training this summer in hopes of a state championship. Both coaches pushed their teams through hard practices and meets with the idea of responding from last years shortcomings. All the hard work paid off in the end for both teams.

“The team has been diligent in their effort to focus on their goals both as a team and as individuals and that helped us attain two state championships this year,” said Coach Richards when asked about the cross country teams. Although the girls team is young, they proved their dedication and guts this year. Coach Richards emphasize to the team that what Christ did on Calvary outweighed whatever pain they might experience at Mountain Home State Tournament Course, even though the course would probably be the hardest they would ever experience. The sweetest part about the girls state championship, according to Coach Richards, is that no one predicted the Shiloh girls team to win. With regards to the boys team, Coach Richards said, “(They are) experienced and very focused. The leadership on this team is unmatched.” Coach Richards concluded that she is honored to be a part of such a fantastic program.

With both the boys and the girls team winning state championships, Coach Godfrey was simply impressed. First, he thought both teams responded in a big way from last season. After losing by one point last year, it’s hard to come back from that with victory. The boys team came back and won by a controlling twenty-five points, and the underdog girls team won by 13 points. As far as leadership for the team goes, Coach Godfrey believed that everyone (both boys and girls) did their part in leadership. “Overall the team cohesion was there,” says Coach Godfrey, “The fellowship and prayer all made a big difference.”

When asked about a repeat next year for both boys and girls Coach Godfrey responded, “The guys can probably do that we did this year. The girls will have a target on their back all next year because they were the underdog last year, but now they are on top.” With both teams looking forward to next season, a lot of work will have to be done to get another state title. Overall Godfrey humbly concluded, “I’m just thankful for the opportunity to serve.”

Cross Country Takes State

Our cross country program is one of the best in the state. With the coaching talent of Godfrey Siamusiye and Marla Richards, the girls and boys cross country teams competed on one of the hardest courses in Arkansas. Running in mud, the course was a length of 3 1/8 miles with up and down. Both girls and boys divisions brought home the 4A State Tournament titles, earning a spot in Shiloh Christian history. The Cross Country State Tournament took place in Mountain Home, Arkansas.
The Shiloh Testament Staff recently interviewed some of the boys and girls on the team. They were asked:
· What was the course like?
· How did you prepare for the race?
· Who was your competition?
· What did you place?
· What was it like to be a part of the team?
· How was your run?
· What do you think of Coach Godfrey?
Andrew Evans
· The course was the toughest I have ever run. It was muddy and we had to run up hill twice.
· I had some good pasta the night before, and we jogged right before the race.
· Lucas and Mason
· 1st
· Awesome, we weren’t happy with the last years State Tournament and wanted to show everyone there what we could do.
· We started with all four of us in front for the first half mile.
· He is the best Coach in the state, and knows exactly what to do, and knows exactly what it takes.
Daniel Evans
· The course was really hard; there were a lot of hills.
· We practiced every morning. And the morning of State I ate a good breakfast.
· Heber Springs
· It was fun being a freshman at State.
· He is a really good coach; he knows what to do and how to do it well.
Lucas Peiser and Thomas Gaston
· LP: We had gone to the course before.
TG: Ya, so we knew what to expect.
· LP: Heber Springs
TG: The other teams were good but the scores didn’t turn out to be close.
· LP: It was fun having a bigger team this year.
TG: Winning State was a big deal but no one made it to big of a deal.
· LP: He’s really funny.
TG: Godfrey is an interesting character. He got the program to where it is today.
Maddie Elliot
· The course was really hilly
· Practiced every morning at the Chili Pepper course since June
· Heber Springs
· Second
· Running with the High School for a couple of races was a lot of fun. We worked hard together, and wanted to win but more importantly wanted to do our best
· Really good
· Love Godfrey. He’s funny, talented, dedicated, and (when we practice) he wins every morning
Alexis Jones
· It was the hardest course I’ve ever ran
· I prepared by going to all of the practices, and listened to Godfrey
· Heber Springs
· 10th
· We had a fun season. The junior high won a lot and that was a lot of fun to be apart of
· Once again, it was the hardest course I’ve ever ran
· I love him. He’s a funny guy, but serious with running

Senior and Junior Pranks

Each year during homecoming week the Seniors and Juniors attempt to prank the school. This year was truly a year to remember. Juniors filled cups with water and spread them around the choir room where the Seniors have their first class. The Seniors, ready to go to college, bubble-wrapped the entire highschool hallway and Dr. Jones' office. Good job to both Senior and Junior classes! Here are some pictures of the pranks:

K4 Visits the Tontitown Fire Department

72 K4 students, 6 teachers and several parents went to the Tontitown Fire Dept. on Thursday morning. Although the rain clouds were all around us…God held off the rain until we were on the bus coming back to school! Besides touring the station and trucks, we also were able to play at the park and have a picnic lunch from McDonald’s…it was a great day.

Isaac Foley: All Region Choir

Singing at Har-Ber High School at 7:30 on a Saturday morning doesn’t sound like the most fun event to attend, but one of our choir students was blessed with the honor of All-Region. Isaac Foley, Senior Choir member, competed with over a thousand other students from Norwest Arkansas. Prior to the Saturday’s competition, the students were given four pieces of music to study. Upon arriving to the audition the students were told which piece of music they would perform. All-Region is split up into sections of competition. Isaac competed in the bass 1 division.

When he got to Har-Ber, Isaac was told which parts of the songs he was to sing. Isaac didn’t have much time to practice the songs because he was one of the first to audition. The songs Isaac sang were: Psalm 43, John Saw duh Nubah, and Going up to Glory. After singing his songs in front of five judges, Isaac left Har-Ber knowing that he did the best that he could and now it was all up to the judges.

Isaac wasn’t told that he made all-region until Monday morning by Mr. Griffin. He was the only student from Shiloh to place. Isaac’s accomplishments gave him the opportunity to try out for All State Choir. However, Isaac will be attending the GME mission trip during the competition and will not be able to compete. Congratulations to Isaac from the Shiloh Testament!

Swine Flu

The phrase, “swine flu,” is feared by many. It is really called H1N1, and several things about it, including its common reference as the swine flu, have many people baffled. It can be very confusing when someone you know has the swine flu and is fine a week later, but then someone on the other side of the country dies from it. As the disease spreads so do the false ideas about it, thankfully all our questions can be answered legitimately from sources such as the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).
For starters the reason the H1N1 flu is called swine flu is because this specific type of influenza is commonly found in North American pigs. However the most recent research shows that there are very few similarities between them. It is spread the same way as any seasonal flu, from person to person. It is contagious just like any other flu, from coughing and sneezing or coming in contact with a person who has it. The tricky part is you won’t know you are sick for at least a week. Apparently it could be longer if your immune system is weak. If you are diagnosed with the flu, do not panic, it might not even be swine flu. There are three different categories of influenza. Influenza A is made up of subtypes. This season they are H1N1 and H3N2. There is also type B and C. The flu shot is supposed to protect against types A and B. The deaths caused by H1N1 are usually contributed to by other severe diseases. Since it is a respiratory virus, people with severe respiratory diseases will have a harder time recovering. There are vaccines for H1N1 and other seasonal strains of the flu. Just remember to wash your hands, cover your mouth, and consider getting the vaccination!

First FBLA Meeting of 2009

The first FBLA meeting of the year began with anxious officers and hungry members. Everyone’s needs were quickly met with some Chick-Fil-A chicken nuggets from our generous speaker, Mr. Jim Bryant. He spoke to students about the importance of keeping Christ in a business. Mr. Bryant added some surprising flair to his presentation by tossing out the signature “eat more chikin” stuffed cows to students who paid proper attention and answered questions. This spirited speech was the perfect start of the year for the ambitious Future Business Leaders of America.

Playing Smart: Shiloh Golf

With the state golf tournament next week in Arkadelphia, the Shiloh golf team is preparing to win it all. Coming off of a 4A Region 1Golf Tournament win of 10 strokes, the Saints are confident about state. At regional’s, Chase Wakefield and Trent Tollett tied for 3rd overall with a 77, and Tyler Kelsay shot a 78. David Matthews finished with an 81. The 4A Region 1 Golf Tournament allows each team to play four players, and to take the top 3 scores to combine to make their final score.

In preparation for next week, the Saints will practice two times at the Creeks, and two times at Paradise Valley. Coach Slaughter, the head coach of the golf team, says that they are just going to hit a lot, and to putt a lot. “All four of my guys have the ability to shoot in the 70’s, which is great. Not many teams in the state, or the nation, can say that,” says Coach Slaughter.

Wakefield, one of the four golf players, believes if the team doesn’t let nerves get to them they can come out with on top. With the short game as his strength, Wakefield hopes he can use this to his advantage over the other teams. With regards to Coach Slaughter, Wakefield says he’s a great guy and wouldn’t want to travel to state with anyone else. Lastly, Wakefield feels like Coach Slaughter is more than a coach, but more like a role model.

Although the Saints have a great team, the state tournament will not be a walk in the park. Some of the state’s best will be at the tournament. Wakefield noted that the one team they are worried about the most is Fordyce. Lane Hulse, from Fordyce, shot 3- under par to help his team win their regional tournament. Nevertheless, Coach Slaughter says, “If we don’t three putt, don’t double bogey, and most of all play smart, we can win this tournament”.

FBLA supports the Make A Wish Foundation

This year the FBLA is raising money for the Make A Wish Foundation. Make A Wish takes severely ill children and grants them one wish, for example going to Disney World or meeting someone they admire(athlete, actor, etc.). Every Friday there will be candy for sale in Mrs. Kennedy's classroom. Each item is one dollar, and one hundred percent of the proceeds will be sent to Make A Wish.

Lady Saints Volleyball

The Lady Saints Volleyball team has been having an awesome season. They have won all their games, most recently with a victory against Gravette on Tuesday(won in three games). The next game is tonight, at home, against West Fork. The games are exciting and the student section really gets into cheering; including dressing up in rain coats or occasionally like a trojan gladiator. Come out and support the Lady Saints! It's a great way to spend your Thursday night.

Knight Stagg Wins Gold Medal in Junior Olympics

The Shiloh Testament Staff was recently informed that 9th grader Knight Stagg won a gold medal in the Junior Olympics. Eager to find out more, we interviewed him right away.

Shiloh Testament: First of all what sport did you compete in?
Knight Stagg: Tae Kwon Do
ST: How did you get into Tae Kwon Do?
KS: When I was in the third grade my mom and dad signed me up for it. I didn’t really want to go, but after a while I really started to enjoy it.
ST: Are there a lot of different Tae Kwon Do associations?
KS: Yes, I am in the AAU, which is the biggest one because it includes all the American Territories.
ST: Where are the Junior Olympics held?
KS: It’s in Des Moines, Iowa.
ST: How was it set up and did you have to qualify?
KS: It was organized by weight class, age and rank. I did have to qualify; I had to go to Houston, Texas on May 30th. We had to fight twice in two minute rounds. The top eight qualified, I placed third.
ST: What was the age range of the people there?
KS: 14-15
ST: What was the atmosphere like in the final round?
KS: I just took it one fight at a time. They gave me a different coach to practice with, and I didn’t really know I was in the finals till she told me.
ST: How did you train for this?
KS: I did sparing rounds everyday from May-July.
ST: Can you describe the final round?
KS: I walked out and saw the opponent, who was at the top of the weight class, and much taller than me. He got two points but both were deducted because he kicked me in the back. But I wasn’t ever behind him in points.
ST: Who is your coach and how did they prepare you for the Junior Olympics?
KS: My coach is Elvis Price, he’s from Fayetteville. He’s ranked 20th in the world for Tae Kwon Do. He’s my sparring partner; he kicks me in the head a lot.
ST: What was it like to get the gold medal?
KS: It’s hard to explain unless you’re there and you really want it. I worked for a year and a half for this and it’s a good feeling to know all that hard work paid off.
ST: What’s next for you, are you going to compete in the Junior Olympics again?
KS: Right now I’m training for nationals in November, to defend my title. Then I will also be training for the Junior Olympics next year, which will be in Virginia.
ST: What about the 2016 Olympics in Chicago?
KS: Yet to be determined. I’m looking into it. For that I will have to go to Oklahoma City three times a week for the next few years. It takes a lot of hard work. But it’s a possibility.

New Shiloh Coaches

The Shiloh Christian Athletic department has added two volunteer coaches to their staff. Volunteer Coach Scott Harris is the new head tennis coach and will be leading the 7th grade boy’s basketball program. Volunteer Coach Tommy Roy is our new head soccer coach. Also, Coach Hester is the new head basketball coach.

Volunteer Coach Harris has coached 3000 games in 20 different states and has won 3 national championships in AAU basketball. When he was asked how he likes the school, he responded, “I’m enjoying it.” He wants to make a difference this season and says he has a good group of kids to work with. One of Coach Harris’ goals for the upcoming season is putting together a strong off season program.

Although this is his first time coaching for a school, volunteer Coach Roy still has a lot of experience in coaching club soccer and AAO camps. When he is not coaching soccer he enjoys coaching American Legion Baseball. When asked what his thoughts were when he was selected for the job, he said that he is excited to coach young people. Lastly, volunteer Coach Roy is looking forward to the off season.

Coach Hester, as most of you know, is not a new coach, instead he has a new position as the head basketball coach. His previous position was the assistant basketball coach. His thoughts on the season are that the kids are working hard and that they should have a good season. Coach Hester is excited about his new position and ready to have a good season.

Beat the "E"

Last Thursday night was a night to remember when the Shiloh Saints beat the Evangel Eagles. Last year, the Saints went down to Shreveport, Louisiana only to get put away by the Eagles. Since January, the Saints have been putting all their effort towards beating Evangel, or “Beat the E” as the players call it. When asked what thoughts were going through his mind when the game finally ended, Sophomore Cale White responded, “I felt like all our efforts were rewarded.”

Shiloh played a close game with Evangel from the kickoff of the game all the way to the end. Kicker Trevor Tumlinson did a phenomenal job shutting down the Evangel special teams by kicking the football in the end zone for each kickoff. Shiloh began the game by shutting the Evangel offense down, thus forcing a punt. The Saints then marched down the field ending with a 13 yard pass to Garrett Harper. After another punt by Evangel, the Eagles responded by intercepting a pass from Kiehl Frazier, the Saint’s quarterback. This set them up for a field goal, putting the score at the end of the first quarter 7-3 Shiloh.

With both running backs out for the second quarter due to injury, Junior Jason Schisler and Sophomore David Petrino filled the void. Evangel was able to capitalize on an 80 yard touchdown pass that would put them up 10-7. While the offense of Shiloh had trouble producing anything, the defense was able to step up and hold the Evangel offense. With 3 minutes left, the Saints offense was able to make another march down the field and score on an 18 yard run by Frazier. Before the half, Evangel was able to kick a field goal tying the game at 13-13.

As the two teams began to warm up before the third quarter, tension was in the air. Many of the Saint’s starters began to cramp, due to most of them playing offense and defense. However, the Saints players were relentless and kept fighting. Evangel scored first with another field goal, and later a 49 yard pass to put Evangel by 10. Then to the surprise of the Saint’s fans Chris Bryant, who left the game in the first quarter because of a concussion, came in to lead the Saints down the field, and caught a 20 yard pass from Frazier. On the next offensive series for the Saints, Frazier connected with wide receiver Zann Jones for a touchdown, putting the Saints up by 4.

Evangel scored on their first play in the fourth quarter to put them ahead by 3. With 6 minutes left Tumlinson to kicked a 32 yard field goal, tying the game once again. The Shiloh and Evangel defenses were able to stand their ground for much of the fourth quarter. Evangel scored with 4:30 left on the scoreboard, but Mitchell Roberts (middle linebacker for the Saints) was able to block the PAT. With time against them, the Saints rallied together and put together one last drive to win the game. With 18 seconds left Frazier hooked up with Jones in the end zone again. To the dismay of the Evangel fans, Tumlinson made his PAT, and put the Saints up by one. Although Evangel was able to take the kickoff all the way to the Saints 40 yard line, the Saints were able to stop Evangel from scoring on the next offensive play. When the time finally ran out, the Saints were able to walk off the field knowing that all of their hard work was rewarded.

Backpacks of Hope

I think Jesus had it right when he said, real leaders serve. That is one of the quotes I learned at SLU (Student Leadership University), and also I believe it’s one of the best quotes for leaders to know. Serving is the main reason that the Shiloh Leadership Team did the project, Carrying Hope to NWA. Our mission was to sell 200 backpacks for 15 dollars each. Each person that sponsored a backpack would then pray over the backpack for the child that would receive it resulting in 200 prayers. Then it was our turn to reach 200 children by bringing them backpacks full of school supplies. We went out on August 15, 2009 to two different sites in Springdale, AR. We started at about 10:30am; not only did we give out backpacks we were an alarm for many people that day. Children ran out in their pajamas to get their backpacks, their sleepy eyes looking at the four color choices trying to decide which backpack that they should get. Parents also came out to share their gratitude. I remember going up to one lady and asking if she had a child who needed a backpack. “Oh yes, a baby blue one, she replied, “That’s her favorite color, she will be so excited!” I gave her a smile and she went on to say that she didn’t know how they were going to manage purchasing school supplies this year until we came along. All I could think of was how the Lord really does provide. Which is a lesson that we all must learn, God always gives us what we need. This time the need was a backpack for a little girl, and that backpack also was a reminder to us on how he has a plan for us. One mother told us that we could never understand how much it meant to her children to have school supplies, and I think she is right. Even though I can’t understand what those children were thinking I could see it. It was the joy in their faces and the sparkle in their eyes, the happiness in their laugh when they came back to show us the water bottles that were attached to their backpack. That made it all worth it, because when you give hope to people you will most likely get hope back for yourself. I know I did, all because of a simple service project which led to 200 backpacks, 200 prayers and hopefully 200 lives changed by the love of Jesus Christ. This project not only helped my team follow the beginning of our church’s mission statement, to reach NW Arkansas with the gospel, it also got us involved with the community. Our school, Shiloh Christian School is focusing this year on loving thy neighbor and this project kicked off the beginning of a new tradition for the Saints to love on NW Arkansas.

2009 Shiloh Testament Staff

Here’s a look at the 2009 Shiloh Testament newspaper staff:

Savannah Geiger is a senior and the editor of the Shiloh Testament. When Savannah is not working on the Testament, she likes to travel, watch movies, and spend time with friends.

Senior Ryan Marchewka will also be leading the Testament staff this year with his good looks and witty comments. He plays football, is active in his youth group, and enjoys long walks on the beach. When asks what inspires him, he simply replied, “After I eat my Captain Crunch Peanut Butter Crunch in the morning, I’m ready to take on the world.” Ryan will be the assistant editor for the Testament this year.

Ricky Silvestri is an eighth grader at Shiloh. He enjoys talking with friends, playing baseball, and playing football. He is also a regular attendee to cell group at the Matthew’s house.
