Beat the "E"

Last Thursday night was a night to remember when the Shiloh Saints beat the Evangel Eagles. Last year, the Saints went down to Shreveport, Louisiana only to get put away by the Eagles. Since January, the Saints have been putting all their effort towards beating Evangel, or “Beat the E” as the players call it. When asked what thoughts were going through his mind when the game finally ended, Sophomore Cale White responded, “I felt like all our efforts were rewarded.”

Shiloh played a close game with Evangel from the kickoff of the game all the way to the end. Kicker Trevor Tumlinson did a phenomenal job shutting down the Evangel special teams by kicking the football in the end zone for each kickoff. Shiloh began the game by shutting the Evangel offense down, thus forcing a punt. The Saints then marched down the field ending with a 13 yard pass to Garrett Harper. After another punt by Evangel, the Eagles responded by intercepting a pass from Kiehl Frazier, the Saint’s quarterback. This set them up for a field goal, putting the score at the end of the first quarter 7-3 Shiloh.

With both running backs out for the second quarter due to injury, Junior Jason Schisler and Sophomore David Petrino filled the void. Evangel was able to capitalize on an 80 yard touchdown pass that would put them up 10-7. While the offense of Shiloh had trouble producing anything, the defense was able to step up and hold the Evangel offense. With 3 minutes left, the Saints offense was able to make another march down the field and score on an 18 yard run by Frazier. Before the half, Evangel was able to kick a field goal tying the game at 13-13.

As the two teams began to warm up before the third quarter, tension was in the air. Many of the Saint’s starters began to cramp, due to most of them playing offense and defense. However, the Saints players were relentless and kept fighting. Evangel scored first with another field goal, and later a 49 yard pass to put Evangel by 10. Then to the surprise of the Saint’s fans Chris Bryant, who left the game in the first quarter because of a concussion, came in to lead the Saints down the field, and caught a 20 yard pass from Frazier. On the next offensive series for the Saints, Frazier connected with wide receiver Zann Jones for a touchdown, putting the Saints up by 4.

Evangel scored on their first play in the fourth quarter to put them ahead by 3. With 6 minutes left Tumlinson to kicked a 32 yard field goal, tying the game once again. The Shiloh and Evangel defenses were able to stand their ground for much of the fourth quarter. Evangel scored with 4:30 left on the scoreboard, but Mitchell Roberts (middle linebacker for the Saints) was able to block the PAT. With time against them, the Saints rallied together and put together one last drive to win the game. With 18 seconds left Frazier hooked up with Jones in the end zone again. To the dismay of the Evangel fans, Tumlinson made his PAT, and put the Saints up by one. Although Evangel was able to take the kickoff all the way to the Saints 40 yard line, the Saints were able to stop Evangel from scoring on the next offensive play. When the time finally ran out, the Saints were able to walk off the field knowing that all of their hard work was rewarded.
